Mould Engineering Given the EdgeQueensland-based Camtech Engineering has founded its design platform on 3D software to maximise capabilities for companies demanding customised solutions.
A specialist in the design of moulds for the PET industry, Camtech is one of the few companies in Australia with the technical know-how and the facilities to manufacture PET moulds which are supplied to the plastic packaging industry. In addition, Camtech also has a significant proportion of its activity in the production of extrusion blow moulds for a wide range of dairy, food, bathroom and laundry products for major Australian and international clients. Camtech is also the largest designer and maker of stack moulds for the manufacture of closures in Australia. To design these moulds, Camtech uses Solid Edge by UGS. Utilising interactive physical analysis of mechanisms, the program has adjustable assemblies and features that all work together to increase flexibility, preserve design intent and help eliminate design errors. It also allows manufacturers who may still be still using 2D design systems to easily evolve to 3D design and benefit from the inherently higher levels of productivity. General Manager of Camtech Engineering, Mr. Roger Clark, says prior to adopting Solid Edge the company was drafting in CadKey - but only in 2D. "This product compared to previous methods does give a much better insight in to what we are designing," said Mr. Clark. "It allows the designer to visualise what is happing in the part being manufactured especially when the component has intricate water ways that crisscross over each other."
Clark also notes that in terms of Return on Investment (ROI), Solid Edge literally has the edge over other CAD products in the market. "This is a cost benefit analysis. Given the cost of Solid Edge compared to high end CAD systems, it certainly has all the capability that is required by us to achieve our goals at a significantly lower cost. "And compared to other lower end systems, its functionality and capability justifies the additional expenditure on the software." Clark says the company has in the past tried and tested a number of other CAD solutions. He says a key attribute of Solid Edge is its ease of use especially if you are upgrading from systems like CadKey or AutoCAD. "In our experience, designers have easily adapted to the software when coming from other systems, said Mr. Clark." As with all versions of the product, the capability of Solid Edge is continuing to grow. A well-regarded attribute of all Solid Edge is its future-proofed design.
As engineering designs evolve and change, so too must any associated documentation. The unique Solid Edge tools persistently monitor the 3D model and automatically highlight and tag views and dimensions that are no longer up to date relative to the model, including information on why they are out of date and what needs to be done to fix the problem. Solid Edge has intelligent design capabilities to help customers rapidly create and evaluate large numbers of design alternatives; optimising form, fit and function, while maintaining design intent and manufacturability of complete systems throughout the design process. Solid Edge includes 'Insight PDM' which seamlessly integrates CAD, design management & web based collaboration into a single tool that is easy to install and manage. Edge Insight Technology is the first application of its kind to support Microsoft Sharepoint 2 and SQL Server. Solid Edge provides collaboration tools that allow the complete enterprise & supply chain to view, mark-up, interrogate and print Solid Edge models. These collaboration tools are supplied free to Solid Edge customers for both internal & external use of the enterprise.
